Ida B. Wells High School

Ida B. Wells High School is a part of the Portland Interscholastic League (PIL). The PIL is a vibrant, urban-based conference with a wide range of field types and conditions. The league includes Grant, Cleveland, Ida B. Wells, Lincoln, McDaniel, Roosevelt, Jefferson, and Franklin. It is known for both historic rivalries and diverse field challenges—often dictated by space, infrastructure, and neighborhood layout.

Field Location: 1151 SW Vermont St, Portland, OR 97219

Left Field 310 ft.

Right Field 315 ft.

Center Field 436 ft.

Backstop 22 ft.

Strategy: Guard the Gaps

  • Enormous center field opens space for extra-base hits—CF must cover deep, corners in slightly.
  • Pitchers should limit mistake pitches middle-in; gap hits can stretch into triples.
  • Prioritize outfield communication and double-cut execution.
  • Backstop isn’t huge but demands active catching—limit free bases on passed balls and wild pitches.

Offensive Game Plan

  • Focus on line drives to the alleys; speed will turn hits into momentum.
  • Encourage aggressive turns and read outfielders’ angles.
  • Hit-and-run opportunities increase if middle infielders are shading toward gaps.
